A judge has directed you to complete a driver improvement clinic, usually with a date attached. Finish it and your completion is reported to Virginia DMV.
DMV sent a letter
Demerit points have reached the level where DMV requires the clinic. When DMV orders it you generally have 90 days.

Take it voluntarily and DMV awards 5 safe-driving points, once every 24 months. No order required.
Where your points put you

What actually happens
Register
A few fields and a card. You are in the course immediately, at any hour.
Eight hours, your way
DMV sets the eight hours. You decide whether that is one long night or four short ones — your progress is saved.
Final exam
One attempt per day, not open book, and you will need proper identification. Course material is closed while you test.
Reported to DMV
Your completion is submitted and you receive your DIC 552B certificate — the only certificate accepted for an online clinic.

Virginia questions
Can the whole eight hours be done online?
Yes. Virginia recognises computer-based clinics as well as classroom ones, and the eight hours are the same either way — you just take them without driving anywhere. This particular course is still going through DMV evaluation, which is stated in full above.
Do I have to finish it in one go?
No. Log out whenever you need to and the clinic picks up where you stopped. Most people spread the eight hours across a few evenings.
What happens if I miss my deadline?
It depends who set it. If DMV ordered the clinic and the 90 days pass, your driving privilege is suspended until you complete it. If a court ordered it, the court decides what happens, which is why the deadline on your order is the one that matters.
How soon does DMV see my completion?
Your completion information will be electronically submitted to DMV within 24 hours.
Will this remove points from my record?
No. Taking the clinic voluntarily earns you 5 safe-driving points, which offset demerit points on your record. It does not delete, clear or expunge anything that is already there.
How often can I take the clinic?
For safe-driving points, once every 24 months. When a court or DMV requires it, that requirement stands on its own.
Which certificate do I get?
Form DIC 552B, the Online Driver Improvement Clinic Certificate of Completion. It is the only certificate accepted for a clinic taken online, and it is included in the price.
Is the exam difficult?
It covers what the clinic covers. You may attempt it once per day, it is not open book, and you will need proper identification. Nothing appears on it that was not in the course.
